Post-operative care instructions

Correct aftercare procedures to follow after a hair transplantation.

Important: This information is provided only to demonstrate some examples of post-op aftercare instructions. You should not follow any of these suggestions without first consulting your surgeon. Every case is unique and the following instructions can be altered depending on specific cases. As such, this information is for demonstration purposes only.

First steps
after a hair transplant procedure

It is important to avoid touching the extraction and implantation areas after a hair transplant. There might be some itching or soreness. If you start picking and rubbing donor and recipient areas, you risk getting an infection or damaging the transplanted grafts.

Sleeping

Sleep on the back and stack pillows to elevate your head. This is the correct sleeping position during the first three nights after a scalp hair transplant. This elevated position for the scalp will reduce swelling and prevent unwanted rubbing of the transplanted grafts during sleep.

Hats and Other Clothing

We will provide every patient with a special hat that should be warn during your flight back home and whenever outside for the first 10-14 days. The hat should be loosely tied. Try not to wear any hats indoors - this will promote healing. You should avoid t-shirts and similar closing, as putting these on over the head can damage the transplanted grafts.

Sports and Activities

We recommend avoiding heavy workouts, saunas, solarium and swimming for about 3 weeks. If you experience heavy perspiration, especially on or about the areas affected by the hair transplant, make sure to shower and follow correct hair wash procedure. Avoid extreme contact sports (boxing etc.) for at least a month, to make sure you do not damage the transplanted grafts.

Medication
and recovery

We will provide you with the necessary medication and the surgeon will produce an individual medication plan for you. Typically this involves just 2 types of medicaments: anti-inflammatory (NSAID) and antibiotics.

Bleeding

Small amount of bleeding, typically from the donor area, is normal during the first 2-5 days after the hair transplant.

Swelling

You might experience some swelling around the scalp between 2-7 days following the procedure. Correct sleeping position and staying upright as much as possible during the first few days decreases both swelling and bleeding. If you do experience swelling, remember that this is normal and it will disappear after a few days.

Itchiness and Redness

As your scalp is healing in the days after the transplant, you will see some redness and you might experience some itchiness and tightness around the transplantation areas. This is absolutely normal. Make sure to avoid itching or picking your scalp in the first days after the transplant, as this might damage the transplanted grafts or cause inflammation.

Pimples

Pimples appearing on the scalp after a hair transplant is a sign of new growth. It is absolutely normal to see pimples after a hair transplant. These will go away and we recommend to keep them clean and do not pop them.

Hair wash:
procedure to follow after a hair transplant

We recommend starting your daily hair washes about 48 hours after your transplant.

  1. With clean fingertips, apply the provided lotion on both the implantation and donor areas. Do not rub the implantation area. Leave the lotion in for about 30-45 minutes
  2. Completely rinse out the lotion with warm water using normal/low water pressure
  3. Gently apply the provided shampoo using your fingertips. Do not let your fingernails to come in contact with the scalp and do not apply excessive pressure
  4. Rinse of the shampoo and dry your scalp with a clean towel - do not rub, only tap gently. Do not use a hairdryer and do not apply any other products

Repeat this process every day to help break down crusting. After about 10-14 days, you can return to your usual hair wash cycles.

Hair wash:
procedure to follow after a hair transplant

Within the first 2-6 weeks after the procedure, the transplanted hair will fall out. This is normal and grafts will remain in place. New hair will start growing after that. It can up to 8-12 months to see the full results of a hair transplant, but you will start seeing regrowth earlier than that. Rate of hair growth and recovery varies significantly from patient to patient.
